Dynamic Calorie Goals

Overview

Dynamic Calorie Goals is a new feature that gives you more accurate and customizable calorie targets. It incorporates activity levels, body scan results, and logged workouts to ensure calorie goals adapt to individual needs and help you achieve better alignment with your personal lifestyle and weight loss goals.

This feature includes:

  • Ability to set your Activity Factor.
  • Ability to have your calorie goal updated based on your Body Scan data.
  • Uses your fat mass and lean mass to calculate a more accurate BMR and calorie goal.

Dynamic Calorie Goals Feature Availability

The Dynamic Calorie Goals feature may be available to select Noomers who are enrolled in the English version of Noom Weight or Noom Med, meet certain program requirements, and have the most recent version of the Noom App installed on iOS or Android (12.46.0 or higher).

Activity Factor

The Activity Factor (AF) reflects an individual’s general activity level and determines how much energy they expend beyond their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). You can choose one of the following:

  • Dynamic (1.2): Adjusts calorie goals based on logged activity.
  • Somewhat Active (1.5): For individuals with moderate daily activity.
  • Very Active (1.7): For highly active individuals.

Changing Your Activity Factor

You can change your Activity Factor at any time in the Noom app settings. As soon as you update your Activity Factor, the changes are applied immediately and your calorie goals update accordingly.

To change your Activity Factor:

  1. Open the Noom app and tap the profile picture icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Weight and Calorie Settings (iOS) or Calorie Settings (Android).
  4. Tap Activity Level and select your preferred Activity Factor.

Workout Adjustments

Workouts will affect calorie goals, and once you log a workout:

  • Calories burned beyond a set threshold (based on your BMR) contribute to your calorie budget.
  • Half of the calories burned above the threshold are added to both the minimum and maximum calorie goals for the day.

Step Tracking

Tracked steps count toward the calories burned calculation and adjust the calorie goal accordingly, where 1 step equals .05 Calories.

Body Scan Integration

Body scans calculate an individual’s Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) more accurately by using lean body mass, fat mass, and other metrics. This BMR can be used as the basis for their calorie goal if you choose to enable this option. If you haven’t completed a body scan, you’ll see a prompt in the calorie goal settings screen encouraging you to try one. Just tap the Start my body scan button to go through the body scan flow.

Opting Out of Using Body Scan Data

If you have the body scan data option, you can toggle its use for calorie goals on or off in the Noom app settings. By default, this setting is turned on after you complete your first body scan so it may already be turned on.

To toggle the Body Scan option on/off:

  1. Open the Noom app and tap the profile picture icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Weight and Calorie Settings (iOS) or Calorie Settings (Android).
  4. Tap the Sync with Body Scan option on/off.

Calorie Goal and Body Scan Sync

The most recent successful body scan is always used to calculate your calorie goal, ensuring that updates happen dynamically.

Low BMR

If the calculated BMR falls below 1,200 for those who identify as female or non-binary/intersex or 1,500 for those who identify as male, it will automatically be adjusted to 1,200 or 1,500 respectively.
