What happens if you miss a dose of the Wegovy® pill?

What you’ll learn:

  • The Wegovy pill has very specific rules for when it can and can’t be taken.
  • If you miss your daily Wegovy pill and have already had food/water, wait until tomorrow.
  • Never take more than one pill a day to “double up” from a missed dose.

Taking a daily pill can sound convenient. But the Wegovy® pill comes with specific timing rules that can make it a little harder to fit into a busy morning. Unlike other oral meds, you can’t take it whenever you remember during the day, with breakfast, or alongside your first cup of coffee.

That can make a missed dose feel stressful—especially when you realize it after you’ve eaten. The good news is that the directions are simple: skip the missed dose and take your next dose the following morning.

Don’t take an extra pill later in the day or two pills the next morning to catch up. The Wegovy® pill is designed to be taken once daily, and the FDA-approved prescribing information says not to take more than one tablet a day.

Here’s why the timing rules matter, what to do after a missed dose, and how to handle common morning mix-ups.

How to take Wegovy® pill: The rules to know

Before getting into what happens when you miss a dose, let’s go over how you’re supposed to take the Wegovy® pill. It’s a once-daily medication, but it isn’t an anytime-of-day medication. To take it as directed:

What should I do if I miss a dose of Wegovy® pill?

Sometimes, life gets in the way of taking your medication exactly as you should. If you miss a dose of Wegovy® pill, follow these steps:

  1. Skip the missed dose.
  2. Take your usual prescribed dose the following morning, at your regular time.
  3. Don’t take two pills at once or more than one pill in a day to make up for it.

That means there’s no catch-up window later that afternoon or evening. Even if you remember soon after your usual time, wait until the next morning and return to your normal routine.

Why do I have to wait 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy® pill to eat or drink?

The rules may feel strict, but there’s a good reason for it. The goal is to help you get the full benefit of the medication you’ve been prescribed.

The Wegovy® pill pairs semaglutide with SNAC, an ingredient that helps the medication make it through the stomach and into the bloodstream. Absorption from a pill can vary more than absorption from an injection, so the pill is taken every day and comes in a higher milligram dose. Taking it the same way each morning helps make the amount your body absorbs more consistent.

Food, beverages other than water, and other oral medications can get in the way of that process.

The 30-minute rule is a minimum, not a narrow window you have to hit. Waiting 45 minutes or an hour before breakfast or coffee is fine. The important part is giving the medication at least 30 minutes before anything else enters your stomach.

Can I take the Wegovy® pill at night instead?

No. The Wegovy® pill should be taken in the morning after an overnight fast—not at night, even if you haven’t eaten for several hours. The approved instructions don’t establish an evening fasting period that can substitute for taking the pill first thing in the morning.

Keep these points in mind:

  • An empty stomach at bedtime isn’t the same as the approved morning routine.
  • Don’t move your dose to nighttime on your own.
  • Ask your prescriber or pharmacist for guidance if your work or sleep schedule makes morning dosing difficult.

Taking it at bedtime may seem like an easy way to avoid the food and coffee rules. But the Wegovy® pill isn’t an anytime-of-day medication; taking it in the morning creates more consistent conditions for absorption before food, drinks, and other oral medications enter the picture.

If a morning schedule doesn’t work with your job, sleep routine, or other medications, talk with your prescriber or pharmacist rather than switching to nighttime dosing on your own.

Can I drink coffee with the Wegovy® pill?

No. One reason you must take the medicine on an empty stomach is that liquids–not just foods—get in the way of absorbing the medicine. That includes coffee of any type.

Take a Wegovy® pill before coffee, including black or decaf coffee, and wait at least 30 minutes before having your first cup. Here’s what to do:

  • Take your pill with plain water only—up to 4 ounces.
  • Set a 30-minute timer.
  • Have coffee after the timer goes off.

Black coffee isn’t an exception because the rule is about the conditions needed for absorption—not about calories or whether something breaks a fast.

If you drink coffee too early one morning, don’t take another tablet. Just continue with your regular once-daily dose the following morning. The bigger concern is making early coffee a daily pattern, which could make how much medication you absorb less predictable.

Why you shouldn’t double up on Wegovy® pills

It can be tempting to take an extra pill to stay on schedule, but more medication doesn’t make up for a missed dose. It may increase your risk of side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation.

Wegovy® pill is taken once a day as part of a treatment plan that includes a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Missing one dose doesn’t mean you’ve failed or that your treatment is off track. The most helpful next step is simply getting back to your usual routine the next morning.

What if I forget and eat or drink within 30 minutes of taking the Wegovy® pill?

Life happens, and you may not get the timing perfectly. That’s okay, just don’t take another pill. Instead:

  • Let the day’s dose stand as is. It may not work as well, but one day likely won’t make a huge difference in the long run.
  • Continue with your usual once-daily dose the next morning.
  • Aim for the full 30-minute wait tomorrow.

Eating, drinking coffee, or taking another oral medication before the 30 minutes are up may mean that less semaglutide is absorbed. But taking a second tablet could give you more medication than prescribed and isn’t recommended.

Remember: One imperfect dose doesn’t need a “fix”—just aim to follow the directions the next day.

Tips to avoid missing a Wegovy® pill dose

Daily medications are easiest to remember when they’re part of an existing routine. Here are some ideas that can help:

  • Set one daily alarm. Give it a label like “Wegovy® pill + water.”
  • Keep the bottle somewhere you’ll see it first thing. A bedside table or next to your morning water glass can work, as long as it’s stored safely and according to the label.
  • Make the 30-minute wait useful. Get dressed, shower, walk the dog, or pack your lunch before having coffee or breakfast.
  • Use a backup reminder. A calendar notification or medication-tracking app can be helpful on busy mornings or while traveling.
  • Plan ahead for early mornings. If you need to take other oral medications when you wake up, ask your prescriber or pharmacist how to time them around the Wegovy® pill.

When to contact your prescriber

A single missed dose usually doesn’t require a call. Reach out to your prescriber or pharmacist if you:

  • Have missed multiple doses
  • Aren’t sure whether a dose was absorbed
  • Take another medication with specific timing instructions
  • Find that side effects are making it hard to take Wegovy® as directed

They may be able to help you manage symptoms or adjust your plan. For some people, that may mean switching to an injection that’s only once a week and doesn’t have strict rules around timing.

Get medical help promptly for severe or persistent stomach pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. See the Wegovy® prescribing information for full safety information.

Frequently asked questions about missing a Wegovy® pill

What happens if you take Wegovy® pill every other day?

Wegovy® pill is prescribed to be taken once daily. Taking it every other day instead of every day may mean you’re not getting the treatment as prescribed, which could affect its benefits. Don’t change your schedule on your own; talk with your prescriber if daily dosing is difficult to manage. Read more: Wegovy® pill for weight loss: What to know.

What happens if I don’t wait 30 minutes after taking Wegovy® pill?

Eating, drinking anything other than plain water, or taking another oral medication too soon may reduce how much Wegovy® your body absorbs. Don’t take another pill to make up for it. Take your usual dose the following morning and try to wait the full 30 minutes before anything besides water.

Can I skip one day of Wegovy® pill?

Yes. If you miss a dose, the manufacturer’s directions are to skip that day and restart the next day at your regularly scheduled time. Do not take two pills at once or more than one pill in a day.

Why can’t I eat or drink for 30 minutes after taking Wegovy® pill?

The tablet needs time to be absorbed in your stomach. Taking it on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water, then waiting 30 minutes before food, other drinks, or oral medications, helps the medication absorb as intended.

The bottom line: If you miss a Wegovy® pill dose, take the next pill tomorrow

If you miss a Wegovy® pill dose, skip it and take your next regularly scheduled dose the next morning. Don’t take more than one pill in a day, and don’t double up. If you eat before taking your pill or don’t wait the full 30 minutes afterward, don’t try to correct it with another tablet—just return to your normal routine the next day.

If you have questions about a missed dose—especially if you’ve missed more than one—contact your prescriber or pharmacist. They can give guidance based on your dose, health history, and other medications

If you’ve missed multiple daily doses, are having significant side effects, or aren’t sure how to restart, contact your healthcare provider. The longer the break, the more important it is to get guidance rather than simply returning to your previous dose on your own.
