NOOM +HRTRx

How to use
HRT medications

Follow our step-by-step guides on how to properly use the HRT medications included in your Noom + HRTRx plan.

◆ Estradiol Patch

Our estrogen patch is a small adhesive patch that works by delivering hormones through your skin and straight into your bloodstream. The hormones in the patch are bioidentical, which means they’re molecularly the same as ones your body naturally produces.

1

Choose your site

Apply to clean, dry skin on the lower abdomen, buttocks, or outer thigh.

Avoid the breasts and areas with cuts, irritation, or oily skin.

2

Prepare the skin

Do not use lotions, powders, or oils before application.

3

Apply the patch

Remove the backing and press the patch firmly for about 10 seconds.

4

Change as directed

Replace the patch as directed on your prescription label. Rotating application sites can help avoid skin irritation.

◆ Estrogen Body Cream

Our estrogen cream is a bi-est estrogen cream, meaning it contains two types of estrogen: estradiol and estriol. By combining both a stronger estrogen (estradiol), and a less potent form (estriol), the aim is to provide an effective treatment with a lower risk of side-effects than with estradiol alone. The hormones used are bioidentical forms of natural estrogens, which means they are molecularly the same as hormones naturally produced by the body.

1

Choose your site

Apply to hairless areas like your inner thighs or forearms. The inner length of one or both forearms is a good choice. Do not use lotions, powders, or oils before application. Consider applying after a shower when your skin is clean and ready to absorb the medication.

2

Dispense the cream

Turn the base of the container to dispense the product the desired number of times, as prescribed. You will hear a ‘click’ with each turn.

3

Apply the cream

Use the device to rub cream into the skin. Rotate sites if you develop any irritation over time.

Compounded medications are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, efficacy or quality.

◆ Progesterone Pill

Our progesterone pill contains micronized progesterone, a bioidentical hormone that is molecularly the same as the progesterone produced by the ovaries before menopause. Micronized progesterone balances the effects of estrogen on your uterus and helps maintain overall hormonal balance.

1

Follow the prescribed dose

Take the pill at bedtime, as close to the same time as possible each day. This medication may increase drowsiness.

2

Swallow whole

Do not crush or chew the pill.

Note: Only patients with a uterus are prescribed progesterone because it serves specifically to protect the lining of the uterus during treatment. Progesterone has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of serious side effects related to the uterus.

3

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, it’s generally best to skip the missed dose and resume your usual schedule the next evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to start taking HRT?

There’s an ideal time to start hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to get the most benefits—usually within 10 years of menopause and before turning 60. Starting sooner rather than later could reduce your risk of osteoporosis and heart disease—all while helping you feel better now. With Noom’s personalized approach, you can take charge of your midlife health and get the guidance you need to make the most of this crucial window. Be sure to consult your clinician before beginning any new treatment plans.

What are the potential side effects?

Common side effects can occur, such as bloating, tenderness in the breasts, and temporary vaginal bleeding or spotting. Noom’s clinicians are here to help you manage side effects, which could include tailoring your prescription. Side effects can be similar to what’s experienced at certain times during the menstrual cycle, in pregnancy, or with the use of hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills.

Are these treatments FDA-approved?

Our bioidentical transdermal patch and micronized progesterone pills are FDA-approved. While the FDA does not review compounded medications, our estrogen body cream is USP-compliant, which means that it meets the quality standards set by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and is produced in US-based, state-regulated compounding pharmacies. Every batch is tested by an FDA-registered third-party lab to ensure it meets Noom’s quality standards.

Will my risk of breast cancer go up using hormones?

There remains conflicting information in the market about breast cancer risk and HRT. A controversial 2002 study, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), reported a link between HRT and breast cancer that many now believe was overstated or flawed. Women in the WHI who used estrogen-only HRT actually showed a reduced risk of breast cancer, and overall the data showed no increase in cancer deaths for women on HRT. A more recent UK study found women who used estrogen-only HRT and women who used estrogen with bioidentical progesterone had no increased risk of breast cancer. A comprehensive analysis showed HRT reduces mortality risk when initiated within 10 years of menopause and/or under 60 years of age.

Does the risk of getting a blood clot increase with hormone therapy?

According to a large 2019 study, transdermal (through the skin) forms of HRT were not associated with increased blood clots. Noom only prescribes transdermal estrogen patches and creams as part of Noom + HRTRx. There is evidence that some forms of estrogen, primarily oral tablet forms, have been associated with increased risk of blood clots. Your clinician will review your medical history before providing a prescription.

Can HRT treat depression in perimenopause and early menopause?

In some instances, patients may benefit from HRT if there are no contraindications to prescribing it, but HRT is not a first-line treatment for depression. Be sure to consult your clinician before beginning any new treatment plans.

Can HRT treat thin bones or osteoporosis?

HRT may be helpful in preventing bone loss, but it is not approved for the treatment of existing thin bones or osteoporosis. Be sure to consult your clinician before beginning any new treatment plans.
