When I restarted Noom this past January, I was ready to get back on the program. After a particularly stressful 2021 and holiday season where I regularly ate cookies for breakfast, I felt like I needed help better understanding why I make the choices I do, reframing my thoughts around food, and learning more about calorie density, portion sizes, and planning my meals ahead of time.
But I was not super jazzed about getting back on the scale. In the Noom program, we talk a lot about why it’s important to weigh yourself frequently, and how doing so will help reduce your scale anxiety. It’s based on the principle of exposure therapy: the more you expose yourself to a stressor, the less it will stress you out in the long run.
That’s all well and good, but stepping on the scale for the first time in nearly two months was still intimidating for me. I enjoy tracking my health and fitness statistics on the Health app on my iPhone, and using my Apple Watch to track steps, exercise, heart rate, and more. So, I was looking forward to trying a smart bathroom scale that could give me more stats than just my body weight. Enter the Renpho smart scale. Although the brand sent me the scale months ago for editorial consideration while I was a fitness editor, before I even started at Noom, the company didn’t pay me and the post is not sponsored—this is my personal experience and honest review.
The many health indexes the Renpho Smart Scale tracks
This digital scale made weighing in… dare I say… fun? The Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale – Basic is another way to optimize my personal health data in a way that’s easy to track. It measures not just your body weight, but also calculates your body fat percentage, BMI, muscle mass, and other body composition indexes—more than a dozen in total.
Before I go any further, I want to preface this by saying that while the Renpho scale gives you data on health indexes such as bone mass, metabolic age, percentage of subcutaneous fat, and total body fat percentage, stepping on a digital scale at home is not the most accurate way to take these measurements. No shade to Renpho, but a more accurate measure of body fat percentages is with an InBody scan (you can find them at some gyms or doctors’ offices), which sends electrical currents through your entire body to capture the data. However, even InBody scans aren’t 100% precise. An even better way is with a DEXA scan, which measures how much muscle mass and body fat you have and adds up the percentage of fat mass stored in your trunk, legs, and limbs. DEXA scans are pricey, and usually performed at specialty clinics rather than at your local gym.
All of that being said, I found the Renpho smart scale an affordable place to start building the habit of weighing in consistently, and being able to get a rough estimate of other health measures and how they are trending. And as I continue to weigh in, I’m able to track my progress over time and focus on the trends (vs. the absolute numbers).
How to set up the Renpho Smart Scale app
To optimize your scale, make sure you download the Renpho app (available for iOS and Android) and connect the scale to your device. You can also sync this data with Apple Health, Samsung Health, Google Fit, and the Fitbit app. When you sign up in the Renpho app, you put in your age, sex, and height to get the most accurate data. You can also set a goal weight (although this isn’t necessary).
If you want to track more measurements, there is a “circumference” tab in the Renpho app where you can add bodily measurements including your neck, bust, abdomen, waist, hips, biceps, thighs, and calves. Although I didn’t take these measurements, they might be another useful way to track your progress and celebrate non-scale victories.
What’s it like to use the Renpho Smart Scale?
Perhaps the most fun part about using the Renpho scale is when you first step on it. When I weigh in, I have the Renpho app pulled up, and it automatically shows me my body weight, BMI, body fat percentage, and the other body composition data. I like assessing where I am and tracking how my numbers compare from each weigh-in to the next. Each time you use the scale, this data stays stored in the Renpho app, so if I forget to add my weight to the Noom app, I can always reference the Renpho app to get my most recent weight.
And since the scale looks sleek on its own (I have the black one), I don’t mind having it displayed prominently in my bathroom. Like we say in the program, you want your scale to be in a place where you can easily access it and use it often—otherwise, it’s out of sight, out of mind.
How much does the Renpho Smart Scale cost?
Although I know all of the body composition data on the Renpho smart scale isn’t 100% accurate compared to what you would get at a specialty clinic, I like having all my health stats in one place. It makes a great point of reference as I continue to step on the scale and track my progress, and gives me more numbers to strive for beyond just my body weight. As I’ve seen my body weight, BMI, and body fat percentage slowly decline, it’s given me motivation to keep going. And for less than $50, you can’t beat it.
