Press Release: Noom’s Diabetes Prevention Program is the First Fully Mobile Program to Receive Official Recognition by the CDC

by | Apr 11, 2017 | Last updated Apr 14, 2023

The program is the only fully mobile DPP to be proven successful in a peer-reviewed study

Noom, Inc. announced today that it has officially received recognition for its diabetes prevention program (DPP), making it the first virtual provider to be fully recognized by the CDC. Noom developed its diabetes prevention program in fall of 2013 and was the first to submit for recognition when the CDC began accepting mobile and online DPP provider applications in 2015.

Building on its success with over 45 million consumers, Noom combined its technology with proprietary, condition-specific programs and human coaches to tackle diabetes prevention along with other chronic and pre-chronic conditions, like diabetes and hypertension.  Noom’s DPP program is the only fully mobile program clinically proven successful in peer reviewed journals.

While significant strides have been made in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, they continue to fall short of the demand. The traditional in-person diabetes prevention program requires participants to attend weekly face-to-face meetings. This model faces challenges of flexibility and accessibility, making it difficult to address the millions with prediabetes. Virtual providers of the DPP, like Noom, offer a solution that will increase access to this much needed program.

The British Medical Journal Open Diabetes Research & Care recently published a study that found 64% of participants who completed Noom’s program lost over 5% of their body weight. Participants of Noom’s DPP were also highly engaged with 84% completing the program and an average weight loss of 7.5% of body weight.

The increasing incidence and prevalence of diabetes poses the most significant public health crisis of our time. According to the CDC, 86 million Americans or 1 in 3 adults, have prediabetes and the total annual cost of diagnosed diabetes is $245 billion. To combat this epidemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced they would make the DPP a reimbursable benefit beginning in January 2018.

“While significant strides have been made in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, they continue to fall short of the demand,” said Dr. David Marrero, one of the creators of the DPP and Chief Scientific Advisor at Noom. “The traditional in-person diabetes prevention program requires participants to attend weekly face-to-face meetings.  This model faces challenges of flexibility and accessibility, making it difficult to address the millions with prediabetes. Virtual providers of the DPP, like Noom, offer a solution that will increase access to this much needed program.”

“Noom is committed to leveraging our mobile behavior change programs to help millions of people around the world suffering from pre-chronic and chronic conditions. Our platform is capable of changing behaviors and delivering meaningful, sustainable health outcomes at a large scale,” said Saeju Jeong, Noom’s CEO and co-founder. “As the first virtual provider to receive full recognition from the CDC, we look forward to playing an important role in tackling prediabetes as the program becomes a reimbursable Medicare benefit in 2018.”
