Easy Indoor Workouts You HAVE to Try

by | Mar 23, 2015 | Last updated Mar 16, 2023

Somehow, winter is still dragging on. We hope most of you enjoyed your first day of spring, but here in NYC, we saw 2-4 inches of snow. While we can’t control Mother Nature, we can help to keep her from killing your fitness mojo. If the thought of being outside sends chills down your spine (literally and figuratively) then these are the workouts for you (and can also be saved for a rainy summer day). Hopefully winter will be over soon, but in the meantime, use these great indoor workouts to work up a sweat and bring a little heat into your fitness routine.

Jump Rope

Want a great cardio workout? Throwback to jump rope, the school yard game that can burn up to 100 calories every 10 minutes! That’s 700 calories over the course of the week if you do it daily. Be cautious though — jumping rope is tough, so start small and increase duration over time. Need some help? Check out this 10 minute routine.

Stair Climb

You don’t need a gym membership to climb steps. Channel your inner Rocky and climb stairs in your house, apartment complex, or any multi-storied building you happen to be in. Your neighbors might look at you a bit strangely, but climbing stairs is a great cardio workout and isn’t as intense as jumping rope, allowing you to workout for longer. If you need a distraction during your climb, buy a stepping block. During your favorite TV show (or during the commercial breaks) you can step up and down — best of both worlds!

Plank

Want to strengthen and tone your core before beach season? Try planking (no, not this wacky craze). To get into position, place your forearms on the ground with elbows aligned below your shoulders and arms parallel to each other, shoulder-distance apart. Extend your legs until they are all the way straight and ground toes into the floor, squeezing your thigh muscles to stabilize your body. If you’re a beginner, try to hold for 30 seconds and gradually add time week by week. Your entire body should feel like it’s working — which is a good thing!

Housework

Not many people look forward to housework. But spring cleaning isn’t all bad! It’s actually a great way to get active and burn some cals. 30 minutes of housework can burn 130 calories. Turn on some pump up jams and get to scrubbing!

Dancing

The best type of workout is one that makes you forget you’re exercising, transporting you to a happy place that happens to also be burning crazy calories. Dancing can burn up to 450 calories per hour and is a ton of fun. Put together an upbeat playlist and let loose. Want to amp up the fun? Grab a friend and get crazy together.

Remember with any workout routine, you should start slow and work your way up. If it isn’t easy right away, don’t get frustrated. It can take a couple of weeks to start seeing and feeling a difference. But keep working hard. The effort will pay off. Now, bring on summer!
