6 quick tricks that’ll change the way you cook

Wouldn’t it be easier if we all had a personal chef at our beck and call to make us delicious and satisfying meals? Truly, that’d be the dream. But, since most of us aren’t celebrities with budgets big enough for a private culinary connoisseur, we have to rely on our own skills. Fortunately, we’re here to help with that—these quick tricks will have you feeling like you’re the host of your own cooking show in no time.

  1. Pasta water is your friend

Pasta water is full of all the starchy goodness left behind by the noodles (and hopefully a generous amount of salt). Use some in your pasta sauce—it’ll help to flavor and thicken it so it sticks to your noods better. Add a splash to your pan and toss together over heat to watch the magic happen.

  1. Apples help your… potatoes?

The ethylene gas produced by apples helps prevent potatoes from sprouting. So, the next time you pick up a bag of potatoes from the store, throw an apple in to join the party. Sprouting, be gone. The more you know, right?

  1. Hash brown hacks

Golden brown hash browns, ready in minutes. All you need is a waffle iron. Fill those grooves with sour cream or maybe even a little drizzle of syrup if you’re feeling daring.

  1. Lemons in the microwave

When you heat lemons, you get more juice. Next time you’re having trouble squeezing out the good stuff, pop your citrusy friend into the microwave for 20 seconds.

  1. When life gives you (too many) lemons

Are your lemons about to go bad? Squeeze the juice into ice cube trays for a later date. Then add a few chilled lemon cubes to a glass of water or tea for the burst of citrus you’re craving.

  1. Manage your mango

Mangos can be tricky to cut—are you supposed to peel them, or slice them into slivers? This quick trick says neither. Cut them into hedgehogs, then grab a cube and enjoy. (We know, very cute.)
