5 Tips for Buying More Fruits and Veggies on a Budget

by | Mar 27, 2019 | Last updated Feb 15, 2022

Sometimes it can be difficult to get in those fruits and veggies, whether it’s because of preference, confusion, or cost. As many of us know, adding fruits and vegetables into your diet can be incredibly beneficial to your weight loss and overall health! If you’re feeling like you want to add in some more of these nutrient-dense powerhouses without breaking the bank, here are 5 tips to help you eat healthy on the cheap!

1. Include frozen and canned vegetables

There has been some information in the past regarding the possible negative nutritional impact of canned and frozen fruits and vegetables. It was thought that they were not as healthy as fresh options, but frozen and canned fruit and vegetables are harvested and then packaged quickly so that their nutritional profile and flavor are preserved. They can sometimes be ready to eat from the package, so no cooking is necessary which is a great time saver (and a win/win for you)!

2. Make a list

Making a list is always a surefire way to get focused and get the job done! It can change the grocery game to make a list of fruits and vegetables that you need for the week. It can help prevent unnecessary purchases, as well as not letting food go to waste. You can plan your meals around what fruits and vegetables are on sale, this way you get your meal planning out of the way and save money (more WINS!)

3. Shop at grocery stores

What goes hand-in-hand with making a list? Taking time to look at your local grocery stores and see which produce is the most economical. Many grocery stores have their ads online so you can narrow things down. Stores often get new shipments of produce in the middle of the week and they’ll want to get rid of the older fruits and vegetables, so this can be a great time to shop. You could also ask your local stores what their day is!

4. Buy in bulk

If you’re feeding a large family is your golden ticket. Even if you’re a smaller family or shopping for yourself, you can just buy and freeze it! This won’t work for everything, as some things taste better fresh, but those you freeze you can always throw into a stir fry for a quick and easy meal! You can also buy things like nuts, seeds, grains and legumes in the dry bulk section of your grocery store which can add to your savings!

5. Consider farmers markets/CSAs

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, which is an arrangement to buy food that is grown or produced by local farms and businesses. This not only supports your local community (which is lovely) but it can also help you save money! Check online to see when your local farmer’s market is active.

Fruits and veggies definitely don’t have to cost you your whole paycheck, so keep calm and follow these steps to both a healthier, happier bank account and body!
