3 things a fitness coach can’t teach you

by | Jan 3, 2019 | Last updated Feb 15, 2022

With the new year fast approaching, more and more people are getting motivated to start 2019 with early morning workouts and commitments to a new and exciting exercise routine! While this is well-intentioned and a great starting point, too many people get hyper-focused on their exercise routine and the calories they are burning each day. They in turn lose focus on the importance of finding balance and using exercise as part of a comprehensive approach to weight loss and a healthier life.

Although it may sound counterintuitive, research has shown that exercise alone does not aid in weight loss. Now don’t get us wrong, exercise has a number of benefits that we will break down in this article – and working with a fitness coach is a great way to develop your exercise regimen. But when it comes to weight loss, studies actually show there is very little difference between people who modify their diet and exercise and people who change their diet alone. That’s why at Noom we believe there are 4 pillars that must work together in order for weight loss and behavior change to succeed. Let’s take a closer look at these pillars and how they can help you reach your goals.

Pillar 1: Nutrition

You have probably heard the saying “you can’t outwork a bad diet”. Love it or hate it, you can’t successfully have long-term and sustainable weight loss without making necessary changes to your diet! Of course those changes look different for everyone depending on lifestyle, preferences, and sustainability. That’s why Noom’s approach to eating works so well! We believe nothing is off limits. Your coach will help you navigate this often confusing world of nutrition to become aware of food choices, serving sizes, and caloric density to ensure you are approaching your eating with your goals in mind!

Pillar 2: Sleep

Sleep. It’s the first thing to go when schedules get busy and times get stressful. Unfortunately missing out on sleep has consistently been linked to higher obesity rates. Countless studies done in different geographical regions have found a significant association between sleeping less than 6 hours per night and an increased risk of obesity. Instead of staying up later to finish work or watch TV, work on establishing a healthy and balanced bedtime routine to ensure you are energized and ready to approach your healthy decisions each day!

Pillar 3: Stress

In today’s fast-paced society, breaks are few and far between. With more commitments and appointments each day, finding time to unwind and focus on self care has fallen to the wayside. The importance of stress management should not be overlooked! Decision fatigue becomes far more likely when you are stressed and focused on everything except your goals. That is why at Noom we believe it is important to focus on stressors in your life and work to find useful and sustainable ways to handle these stressors. Acknowledging these things that bring you stress allows you to work on habits that reduce stress and provide you more bandwidth to focus on the things that really matter!

Pillar 4: Exercise

Now you are probably wondering, if exercise doesn’t directly correlate with weight loss…why should I do it? Outside of burning calories, exercise has many benefits including stress relief, increased energy levels, improvement of body composition, and a reduced risk of developing chronic illness or injury. At Noom we believe it is important to approach exercise with an open mind and find what you enjoy! Too often, people are sucked into the latest fad that is either too intense or completely un-enjoyable for them. Exercise should be something you look forward to and does not have to includes hundreds of burpees or lifting heavy weights. Things like yoga, zumba, and team sports are all great ways to stay active and get the benefit of physical activity! If you’re interested in working with a fitness coach, this is exactly where they can help you.

Regardless of your preferred diet, exercise routine, or stress relieving activities, Noom believes that finding your balance is the most important thing! Don’t get caught up in the hype and fads of the new year but instead focus in on making lasting life change!
