5 Ways to Create a New Comfort Zone

by | Feb 22, 2019 | Last updated Apr 5, 2023

What happens when your once-cozy, secure place is no longer feeling very comfortable?

In our weight-loss journey, how often do we cling to the comfort zones of our childhood? We remember fondly our parents offering to take us to get our favorite flavor of ice cream, or being rewarded with pizza if we did well at school. So, as adults, we say things to ourselves like “I have been so stressed. I need some yummy comfort food,” or “I did so well at work today that I should reward myself with some cookies.” But, as adults, these sources of comfort are no longer as effective as they once were. The relief is only felt for a brief period of time before we are navigating through dense jungles of negative self-talk and emotions.

What are some of the ways you can begin to break out of these not-so-comfy comfort zones?

  • Do everyday things differently: Try mixing up your routine. Instead of coming home and turning on the TV, turn on music and have an at-home dance party to avoid a habit of late-night snacking.
  • Take your time making decisions: Slow down, observe what’s going on, take the time to interpret what you see, and then choose. Sometimes just defending your right to make an educated decision about your foods can push you out of your comfort zone. Think, don’t just react.
  • Stretch your boundaries: A great way to stretch boundaries is to ignite that flame with passions from your childhood. Have you always wanted to learn a new language, try a dance class, or take a photography course? Was one of your goals to run a 5k, a 10k, or maybe even a marathon?
  • Do it in small steps: No matter how big or little the change, try to make it on a day-to-day basis. Changing habits takes time. If you and your significant other like to go to the same restaurant every Saturday night, maybe try ordering something new and different off the menu.
  • And lastly… HAVE FUN: Surround yourself with positive and supportive people who will help you to not take yourself too seriously.
