15 Ways to Put the Fun Back in Fitness

by | Sep 8, 2016 | Last updated Mar 7, 2023

Sometimes we get into such a routine when it comes to physical activity that it loses its fun. Maybe you always head straight to the elliptical at the gym or perhaps you find yourself at the same spin class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you can’t stand another minute on the treadmill or are feeling bored and unchallenged, it’s time to reevaluate your workout routine and put the fun back in fitness!

  1. Grab a friend: Working out with a friend, coworker, or loved one is always more fun! Plus, if someone else is counting on you, you’re less likely to skip your workout.
  2. Go outside: Simply taking your typical workout outside can make things more fun. Plus, you’ll get a nice boost of Vitamin D while you’re at it. Or if you’re looking for something new, start with a park strength circuit!

  3. Get out of the gym: You don’t need a gym to stay fit. Taking a break from the gym and thinking outside those 4 walls will force you to get creative and explore other ways to be active.

  4. Take a class: From zumba to barre to crossfit, there are a variety of classes you can try. Check out your local recreation center, group fitness locale, or park to find a class that sparks your interest.

  5. Invite the family: Tired of tackling your walking or jogging route alone? Make it a family affair and invite your spouse or kids along to join by bike or foot.

  6. Embrace nature: There are tons of ways to get active while enjoying nature. Take a day trip to a nearby hiking trail or test the waters with a kayak or canoe ride.

  7. Tune in to tech: Over the past few years, “exergaming” has become all the rage. Dance, play ball, or try a fun game with apps or virtual activities.

  8. Join a team: Miss the days you played soccer, basketball, or football in school? Join a recreational sports team to meet new friends, stay active, and relive your glory days.

  9. Make it a game: Competition not your thing? Organize a friendly game of soccer, football, or volleyball in the park during the weekend. Invite your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors — you’ll be sure to have a good time.

  10. Be adventurous: Put your adventure cap on and check out a rock climbing gym, parkour center, or a trampoline zone. A little adventure goes a long fun way!

  11. Live it up: Instead of going to the bar for a drink, head to a club to hit the dance floor or have people over for an 80’s themed dance party. You’ll be working up a sweat in no time!

  12. Sign up for a race: Setting your sights on a local 5k walk/run or obstacle course race can be a great way to have fun and meet like-minded people. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to enjoy crossing a finish line.

  13. Go for the gold: There’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. Grab your spouse, your friend or a co-worker for a biking race in the park, see who can do the most burpees in a minute, or find out who can do the most jumping jacks without stopping.

  14. Turn it up: Listen to music while you work up a sweat! Already do? Switch up your set or create themed playlists to suite any mood.

  15. Get a coach: A professional health coach can help you discover what activities you enjoy and brainstorm new ways to be active that you haven’t thought of before. Once you’ve made a plan, they can also help keep you accountable!
