This Week In Weight Loss News

Friday, June 29th, 2012

This Wednesday, the FDA approved a weight loss drug for the first time in 13 years — that’s right, 13! But even this latest break-through is tempered with with a lot of “buts.” The drug, Belviq, is meant for, “obese adults who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes, and is to be used in combination with a low-calorie diet and exercise,” reported HealthDay. Clearly, there’s still no magic bullet for weight loss. Noom’s stance has always been that quick-fix drugs just don’t work. Any weight loss drug or supplement should be recommended and/or prescribed by your doctor. If you’re not sure it’s right for you, never hesitate to get a second opinion. Cutting back on calories and moving more are still the key to weight loss.

A recent study found that exposure to second-hand smoke increased a person’s chances of obesity and type 2 diabetes. All the more reason to avoid breathing cigarette smoke.

That late-night Taco Bell commercial won’t only make you think about a gooey burrito, a recent study found it can actually make you feel hungrier and crave that specific food. Researchers also found the brain reacts more strongly to sugary foods high in fructose.

Study results suggest that a low-GI diet may be more effective than a low-fat diet for long-term weight loss. The researchers found low-GI and low-carb diets to be equally effective, but the low-GI diet didn’t have as many negative health effects. It’s never great to base all your diet decision on one study, but there’s definitely support for the switch from high-GI white carbs to low-GI whole grains.

Alfredo sauce scores about a 0 on the healthy scale, but this “skinny” version of Chicken & Broccoli Alfredo from Celebrations.com is a vast improvement. It swaps olive oil and Greek yogurt for the heavy cream. Don’t forget to go with whole-grain pasta, too!

Mmmm … balsamic roasted tomatoes sound delicious. Hang on a second — you don’t even have to use the oven?! Now there’s a recipe we can tackle. Thanks, Men’s Fitness!

We love this idea for visualizing weight loss. You start with a marble for every pound you want to lose in one jar. As you shed the weight, you move marbles over to the second jar. Thanks to our Pinterest follower, Dee, for sharing this pin!
