CardioTrainer v2.8.1: Split times on the map and bug fixes

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

CardioTrainer v2.8.1 was just released to the Android Market, and it includes a very cool new feature, as well as some small bug fixes.

Split times on the workout map

Have you ever gotten back from a walk or bike ride and wondered how far away the first mile of the workout was, or how fast each mile was? With the latest update, you’ll now see the split time of each mile right on the map of your workout. All of the split times will be automatically calculated for all of the workouts in your history, and automatically displayed when you select a track to view more details.

Music Integration fixes

We’ve fixed the music integration problem with all Nexus One phones running Android 2.2. We’re still  working on fixing the music integration with the other devices that have issues, and we’ll be rolling out these fixes in the next few updates (The HTC Incredible is up next!).

Other bug fixes

- The ability to move CardioTrainer to the SD card has been restored.

- There is now a link to go directly to the CardioTrainer settings page from the Calorie Medals ongoing notification. This makes it much easier to hide the notification if you don’t want to see how many calories you’ve burned in the past seven days.

- UI fixes – The minimum/maximum/average speed display problem on workout “statistics” page has been fixed.

Please send us any feedback, especially if you encounter any problems!

All the best,
The WorkSmart Labs family

Calorific v1.2: New food help menu, water tracking and more

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

After gathering lots more feedback from our users (thank you!) and working through some more ideas of our own, we’re happy to announce that we just released a new version of Calorific to the Android Market. There are some big changes included in this update, so read on for the details.

New food help menu

When you’re using Calorific, it’s really important to understand how to log your food as green, yellow, or red. We’ve added a new way to make it easier to record what you’re eating, and make sure it’s logged in the correct category.

When you click the help buttons on the main Calorific page (below the Green, Yellow and Red buttons), you’re now presented with a “menu” of all of the different kinds of food in that category. Clicking on an item will bring up details about that food, and you can record how much you ate with some easy-to-understand quantities descriptions that can range from “handfuls” to “bowls” to “slices.”

Our goal behind this new food help menu isn’t to add extra steps when you log your food, but help you learn which categories different foods belong to, and to help you get the portions right. That way, the next you enjoy a healthy — or unhealthy! — snack, you’ll know exactly how to record it.

Water tracking

After turning it on with the new settings screen (click the gear icon in the upper left-hand corner), you can track how much water you drink throughout the day. This will add a fourth button to the Calorific home screen, and each glass will show as a blue bar in your food timeline at the bottom. You can also log unsweetened coffee and tea using this category, but no logging lattes or diet sodas — those belong in their own yellow or red category.

Even though it’s not scientifically proven that drinking extra water reduces appetite or has other general health benefits, we found that many users are interested in keeping track of how much water they drink throughout the day and we’re happy to make this possible with Calorific.

Updated Calorie Budget overview

You’ll notice that we’ve also made some small changes to the way your daily calorie budget is displayed on the main Calorific screen. Instead of a single bar divided into green, yellow and red sections, we’ve created three separate bars. As you log your food throughout the day, you will fill up these bars and see how close you’re coming to the recommended amount of food in the green, yellow or red categories for the day. If you have water tracking turned on, you’ll also see a blue bar that fills up as you log your water.

Reminders

On the settings page, you can also turn on reminders so that Calorific will let you know if you haven’t logged anything in the past 8 hours. Don’t worry, these notifications won’t come on during the night.

All of these new features are a big step for Calorific and we would really like to hear your feedback. As we’ve mentioned before, Calorific is supposed to make it very easy to keep track of what you eat, therefore helping you make healthier decisions. These new features should help you learn about the food you’re eating without over-complicating Calorific’s basic tracking capabilities.
